S3 E7: Colin Harper on Bitcoin Journalism and Marxism

Bitcoin Magazine journalist Colin Harper is a university graduate with a degree in English. In his spare time, he takes a lot of interest in politics, enjoys reading studies on various social sciences, and holds the rather unconventional belief that Bitcoin should also be interesting for left-wingers (Marxists and social democrats alike).

Throughout this 80-minute interview, we discuss various experiences from the field of journalism, why Bitcoin Magazine is THE ivory tower in terms of high demands and rigor, and which political issues Bitcoin might be able to solve.

We agree that stateless, uncensorable, and unconfiscatable money should be a tool for all peope regardless of their political views, and then go on to talk about boomers and their views on Bitcoin.

The images that you see in the YouTube version are from the 1948 Leslie Brooks film noir, “Blonde Ice”. It’s an artistic direction that I’ve been meaning to take, since I consider black and white cinematography to be one of the most underrated forms of art. The motion picture is part of the public domain. Find out more details from the Wikipedia page.

Starting this season, 25% of all donations will go to the Free Ross campaign, to help Ross Ulbricht get a second chance. The draconian sentence that he received should concern every bitcoiner around the world, as the government which poses as a champion of liberty gives a double life sentence for indirect and non-violent crimes involving Bitcoin.

It’s a slippery slope that should concern us all, regardless of the jurisdiction under which we find ourselves. The case of Ross Ulbricht has set a dangerous precedent all around the world, as lesser democratic countries can simply prosecute bitcoiners under similar charges and with outcomes that are just as harsh.

If Ross was to receive clemency or at least a second trial with another judge by taking into account the new evidence, the decision would get noticed by judges and politicians worldwide. Whether we like it or not, the USA is an example for the rest of the world and we can actually try to make a difference in a positive sense.

As usual, 50% of BTC earnings will be sent to the guest. In this situation, Colin will be rewarded for his time, effort, and knowledge.
