In Buenos Aires, in an early-twentieth-century pile that still looks aristocratic from the street, Agustin Kassis and Mariano run La Crypta: part Fight Club, part hacker hostel, part orange-pill factory. I recorded Sergio Demian Lerner, Sergi Delgado, and Hernán Marino inside those walls in the same week Argentina watched its last presidential debate before Javier Milei won. Bitcoiners filled the garden. Someone passed Lightning sats for pesos like it was oxygen. I never made it to the basement. Agustin still teases me about that.

On this call they brought the product that grew out of the house: La Wallet, a Lightning stack with Nostr identity, NFC payment cards, and an open-source federation model. Agustin talks mission and mischief. Mariano talks trust gradients and engineering honesty. Together they are trying to hyperbitcoinize Earth starting from a country that already treats the peso like a shitcoin. Season 15 was the Christmas dump of conversations like this one; see the Season 15 preview for the full stack.

The House on Borrowed Time

My first mistake was calling Agustin the owner. He corrected me immediately. The house is lent. Believers in the project handed them the keys. He would not buy it anyway. Too big. Wrong geometry for anything except what they are doing.

About thirty percent of the building is basement: no windows, dark enough that Agustin jokes they could mine there. The owners are waiting on a demolition license so floors of ordinary apartments can rise in its place. Until then, La Crypta gets to be Argentina’s Fight Club. Cowork Tuesdays. Developer talks. Drinking. Building. The trophy from LaBitConf sits upstairs. Boxes of NFC cards hide in the corners. If you only understand Bitcoin as a ticker, the house looks insane. If you understand it as a takeover of the monetary system, it looks inevitable.

Mariano’s framing is almost biological. Most Bitcoin interaction is virtual. The reptile brain still wants bodies in a room, drinks in hand, a safe agora where people can “breathe Bitcoin.” La Crypta is that agora. Two days before LaBitConf I watched Chaincode-style education sessions there. Later guests on this show were in the room that night. The energy stuck.

Argentina Already Knows Fiat Is a Shitcoin

Agustin’s pitch for Argentina is not romantic nationalism. It is trauma literacy.

Argentinians are used to absurd capital controls. Savings melt. Politicians change the rules on live television. At one point they counted something like twenty-seven different dollar rates. Provinces floated the idea of printing their own provincial money when Milei’s national government moved to cut spending. “We don’t use the money the government prints,” Agustin said. “We know that’s a shitcoin right away.”

That cynicism is an on-ramp. A Spanish digital-nomad family told them selling Bitcoin is harder in Europe because the system more or less works. In Argentina things have been FUBAR for decades. Present a money that does not evaporate and people lean in. They do not need a TED Talk about inflation first. They need a path through the technical and philosophical layers.

Mariano put the freedom argument underneath the ticker argument. Monetary oppression is not an abstract essay topic there. You cannot freely save. You cannot freely exchange. Value you brought into society leaks away. Bitcoin’s base-layer philosophy resonates at street level because the street already knows the scam.

I told them my parents’ Romanian wedding story: communism, deposit for a car that never arrived, hyperinflation turning the wedding fund into a couch. Agustin nodded like someone who already owned the sequel. He watched Zeitgeist in the mid-2000s, got furious at paper money, then ignored Bitcoin in 2011 because “money on a pendrive” sounded like a joke. In 2013 he went down the rabbit hole and never came back. Ten minutes of conversation with him and you are getting orange-pilled. He knows this. He calls it his ADHD hobby and his life’s work in the same breath.

Bitcoin or Fuck You

La Crypta’s social rule is not subtle. Agustin asked permission to curse. I said yes.

Inside the house it is Bitcoin or fuck you. No pesos. No Mercado Pago. No credit cards. At their Halloween costume party, strangers showed up for the party, not for the cypherpunk church. A drink cost a few thousand sats. When people asked for pesos, the answer stayed the same. Learn, or leave.

What happened next is the best social experiment in the episode. One girl bought sats, got her drink, then five minutes later was teaching her friends how to buy sats and sell them onward. Organic recursive onboarding in costume makeup. Agustin and Mariano did not script it. They watched the network effect do what network effects do when the rails are simple enough.

That is their doctrine: learn by using, the way most people learned the internet. Not by stacking conference wristbands. Not by memorizing twelve words on day one. Forcing self-custody and personal nodes on absolute beginners, Agustin said, is like telling someone to assemble their own modem before they may open a browser. Blasphemy to maximalist ears. Empirically how Wallet of Satoshi taught millions what sats and LNURL feel like.

They will still do the exorcism when shitcoiners wander in. Web3 tourism is welcome. Leaving with only Bitcoin is the house specialty.

La Wallet: Cards, Nostr, and Federations

Upstairs I had seen the card carriers. La Wallet is the stack behind them.

Agustin describes it as an SDK more than a single app: Docker components, modular pieces for ledger, cards, LNURL, LND, deployable on Umbrel or Start9, spiritually cousin to LNBits. Picture the hyperbitcoinized future, then reverse-engineer the onboarding. In Argentina that means physical cards. Roughly half the country lives near poverty. Most people do not have iPhones or reliable NFC phones. Cards are already how payments feel. So La Crypta ships another card: no KYC theater in the pitch, account in seconds, Lightning under the hood.

Here is the twist that makes Mariano’s eyes light up. Even though the model is custodial for usability, every transaction is signed with a key that lives with the user and published to Nostr. You can rebuild balances by replaying the event history. The federation does not hold the private key that authenticates your spending intent in that design. The code is open source. Cheat the books and the audit trail is public. Trust is still required. Blind trust is not.

They want many federations, not one La Crypta monopoly. Run your own server. Issue your own cards. Plug in your own domain for NIP-05 identities and Lightning addresses. La Crypta’s cards are the first federation implementation. The La Wallet stack is the thing anyone should fork. Agustin literally floated “La Wallet of Bitcoin Takeover” as an example. Flattering. Dangerous. Correct.

They came at Nostr through hackathons and NIP cleanup work. Mariano shipped protocol hygiene PRs. The identity layer is not a marketing sticker. It is how the wallet publishes truth.

Mariano’s Trust Gradient

When Agustin started monopolizing the mic, Mariano took the floor with the calm of someone who has argued this in Discord at 2 a.m.

Ideal world: everyone self-custodies. Real world: many people want bank UX. Bitcoin is big enough for both mindsets. Society already runs a trust market. You hold keys for your mother. You hold sats for a friend who is curious. Pretending that market does not exist is ideology. Leveraging it carefully is strategy.

La Crypta is a community first, company second. Community members already trust the pack not to rug them. La Wallet sits in the uncomfortable middle between “trust the bank because the state says so” and “trust nobody.” Transparency is the mitigation: if they screw users, the Nostr trail and the meatspace reputation both burn. Trust is an asset on the balance sheet. Destroy it and the federation dies.

Lost card? Disable it from the app. Set soft daily limits. Set hard caps. Rotate cards. Newer firmware was landing as we recorded. Cards hold multiple keys and can be role-split: an “admin” card for sensitive account changes, spend cards for daily life, eventually multi-card multisig-style conditions. The pedagogy is the product. Collectible designs (ten models when I visited) turn events and bars into distribution. Want the rare drop? Accept Bitcoin so collectors show up. Conditional money becomes a party favor.

Mainstream or Bust

I asked who the target is: Buenos Aires bitcoiners, or people who do not care yet.

Both said mainstream without flinching. La Crypta began as a nerd hobby. They have thirty-plus open-source projects and a Discord around 1,500 people. Narrow the funnel to existing bitcoiners and hyperbitcoinization never leaves the group chat. Mariano’s line was sharp: interest in Bitcoin is constructed. Hand someone coins cold and the coins have no meaning. Walk them through practice until interest forms, and then the coins matter. La Wallet lowers the first step. Card in hand. Familiar gesture. Curiosity later.

Argentina’s builder density is not a coincidence. Rootstock. LaBitConf’s decade-plus run. Muun. Now La Crypta and La Wallet. Tough times, strong builders, and a deep local talent pool. Agustin added the national ego: Argentinians think Argentina is the best country on Earth. Milei’s libertarian win, in his view, made that ego feel earned instead of tragic. Programmers who survive politicians rewriting reality every week arrive at Bitcoin hungry for rules without rulers. Andreas Antonopoulos gets quoted for a reason.

Honesty About Stablecoins and Volatility

The most adult stretch of the episode is when they refuse the romantic export narrative.

For people with no savings, Bitcoin’s daily swings can be worse than the peso’s grind. A fifteen percent pump and a ten percent dump in a day is not a savings vehicle for someone buying groceries that afternoon. Agustin said it is romantic to imagine the poorest half of Argentina leaping from peso to BTC tomorrow. They are not ready. Volatility has to calm. Until then, stablecoins do real work for day-to-day life even if maximalist Twitter calls them heresy. La Crypta is Bitcoin-first in the house. Outside the house, survival math still counts.

That honesty is why I trust their onboarding thesis more than a conference slogan. They are not selling a fantasy to Americans who listen to this show for ticker dopamine. They are describing a country where better money is a survival tool, and where the tool still has sharp edges.

Come to Belgrano, or Fork the Stack

How do you get a card? At recording time: come to Argentina, come to La Crypta, get it handed to you. They were paying down technical debt after shipping three products in two months. Documentation for an open-source project, Agustin noted, has to be more regular than proprietary vapor. Worldwide shipping was a Q2-next-year aspiration. Collectible drops might stay event-native. The important part is the invitation: bitcoiners traveling through Buenos Aires should treat La Crypta as mandatory. Villanueva 1367, Belgrano, if the map still matches the myth.

I told them the flight from Romania is twenty-plus hours of punishment. They offered European conference intercepts and a care package of cards, with customs declared at a polite lie of one dollar. We have all fought that nineteen percent tax demon.

I left the conversation proud I had been in the house, excited for the wallet, and slightly ashamed about the basement. If La Wallet ships the federation dream, you will not need my plane ticket. You will run the docs, point a domain at Lightning and Nostr, and print your own cards for your own pack.

Until then, the Fight Club still has a front door.
